Limitations & feedback
Limitations
& feedback.
Understand the limits of document chat, find help with common problems, and share feedback about your reading experience.
Known limitations
- Chat is experimental. Answers can be wrong. A citation can point to a passage that does not support the exact claim, including a specific numeric value.
- Table recognition and table-cell retrieval are disabled. Do not rely on document chat to read values from tables.
- Retrieval can miss context. Neighboring passages may be omitted, and form-like layouts can leave text outside the searchable index.
- File sizes are bounded. PDF viewing accepts up to 500 MB; chat preparation accepts up to 150 MB. Scans without a text layer can have up to 700 image pages (1,000 with 16 GB or more). Large files can use substantial memory.
- Cited chat is prepared per document. On eligible devices, choose Prepare for chat for each PDF. Opening a file does not start indexing.
- Chat uses Codex or Claude Code. Other providers and API-key connections are not supported. Your provider’s usage and connectivity limits apply.
- Immediate chat has no citations. On devices that cannot run AI resources, including 4 GB computers, short readable PDFs can use chat without downloads. Image-only content is omitted. Long PDFs and scans still need eligible hardware, resources and preparation.
- Exports cannot restore the app. Markdown and JSON exports do not include the original PDFs and cannot be imported into Platypus. Keep separate backups of your profile and PDFs.
- Platform coverage is limited. Intel Mac and Windows/Linux ARM64 are not eligible for local chat. The initial Linux target is Ubuntu x64.
Use citations to inspect the source, keep copies of your work, and start with a short document whose contents you can check.
When something gets in the way
The AI provider is not available
Check that the CLI is installed and signed in, then open Settings → AI providers, enable it, and use Refresh. Diagnostics includes executable recovery and an optional response test. A quota display being unavailable does not by itself mean answers are disabled.
Resource setup stopped
Return to Settings → AI chat, check the reported error and available disk space, then use its resume or retry controls. Setup verifies resources before use. You do not need to install Python manually.
I cannot ask about this PDF yet
On eligible devices, complete local resource setup and choose Prepare for chat for this document. Check provider availability and the 150 MB chat limit. Devices that cannot run AI resources can use uncited chat for short readable PDFs, up to about 50,000 tokens, without preparation. Long PDFs and scans still need eligible hardware and resources. Use the recovery action shown in chat if a check or preparation fails.
The answer missed a detail or cited the wrong passage
Ask a more focused question and inspect the original text. A selected passage can provide direct context. Table cells are not retrieved, and citations still require verification. Record a reproducible example for feedback.
My notes are not in the original PDF
Notes and highlights are stored in the Platypus profile. Use Settings → Saved data to save Markdown or JSON, and keep a separate backup of your profile and PDFs. Read the data guide.
The OS blocks installation or launch
Follow the installation instructions for your platform. Keep Gatekeeper, Smart App Control, AppArmor, and Electron sandboxing enabled. A blocked configuration may be unsupported; record the OS version and exact error for feedback.
Help improve the next reading session
For questions or to report a problem, contact support@ridingwaves.io.
Include your OS and processor, Platypus version, steps to reproduce, and what you expected to happen. For chat issues, include the provider/model and a minimal, shareable example. Remove private excerpts, personal file paths, and account information from screenshots or logs.
Report security vulnerabilities privately to the same address. Do not put sensitive security details in a public issue.
Third-party software and model terms
Platypus uses third-party software and models with their own terms; see the third-party notices.
EmbeddingGemma has separate terms, use restrictions, and a notice. RAG Setup requires acceptance before installation. Desktop packages include readable license copies in their resources/licenses directory.
